It’s a moot point whether the depiction here is a sea battle since there are quite a few ships and one is clearly shown as stern side sinking. Black smoke is shown at the spot far away where a couple of more ships are there, a full armada in fact!

The time of the skirmish could be afternoon since bright light is shown on the waves. This brilliant 1840 oil on canvas work by Aivazovsky is yet another painting under sea related subjects.
