The Black Sea Painting by Ivan Aivazovsky

The Black Sea.

Aivazovsky has taken Realism to its logical meaning by depicting here the Black Sea in blackish tinge. The sea is calm and at a distance one can visualize a ship sailing.

A few darkened clouds are just above concealing whatever moonlight filters through. Nevertheless the author has painted this subject in his characteristic seascape presentation. This 1881 oil on canvas work is seen at The Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
