The Rainbow Painting by Ivan Aivazovsky

The Rainbow.

A shipwreck is shown in this picture painted by Aivazovsky in 1873 as oil on canvas. The weather is stormy and the sea is violent. The water droplets being tossed in the air as fine spray form a rainbow due to total internal reflection of the sunlight. There is sufficient sunlight filtering through the clouds and the water particles. A group of people can be seen fleeing to safety in a row boat. The author’s favourite topics of sea and shipwreck are manifested in this painting which is displayed at The Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
