The Tenth Wave Painting by Ivan Aivazovsky

The Tenth Wave.

The setting sun and the gushing and rising waves present a great moment for the viewer of the painting. There seem to be five passengers on this boat ( or a raft?) which is encountering wave after wave in its forward journey into the sea. There are thick clouds indicating a storm a while later. The theme of the seascape has been beautifully painted by Aivazovsky in keeping with his professed taste. This 1850 oil on canvas is at the Russian Museum at St. Petersburg.
