“The Departure of St. Florian”, (panel from the St. Florian altar). c.1515. Oil on wood. Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, Italy. St. Florian put himself to torture in the hands of the Roman persecutors hoping to repeat the fate of Christ and many of His followers. He smiled under tortures, saying that his tormentors could kill only his body and not his soul. After being tortured quite a bit he was thrown with a heavy rock on his neck into a river and drowned. Although the martyr fell to the bottom, an amazing wave seized his body as he fell, and raised it up. It was deposited at the on a rock. Then some widow by the name of Valeria carried away his body and gave it a decent burial. The Departure of St. Florian - Famous Art work
