Amedeo Modigliani’s work is recognized immediately because of his
typical elongated shapes. His paintings show his passion for sculpting,
a craft which he had to give up in 1915 due to ill-health. His talent
was instantly recognized by the East European avant-garde. Modigliani
left his world an oeuvre that shows his search for truth and purity within
art.
Modigliani acquired his skill of sculpting during his young age. He visited
the marble quarries of Carrere to acquire first hand knowledge in sculpture.
He had a passion for the traditional sculptures of Africa and Oceania.
He was also exposed to ‘Cubism’ heralded by his friends Picasso
and Braque. The “Head-Painting” by Modigliani is an outcome
of all these influences. The artist had put together tribal art and African
art.
Modigliani’s friend and patron in Paris Dr.Alexandre introduced
him to the sculptor Constantin Brancusi, who encouraged him to do sculpting.
During his years in Paris, Modigliani created not less than twenty five
sculptures including this “Head-Painting.”
Modigliani was able to impart a stylistic unity to his sculptures. Each
“Head” can be immediately recognized as carved by Modigliani.
In these sculptures, the artist has combined sacredness with spirituality.
He developed his own distinctive style.
