Nude – Anna Akhmatova
As a painter Modigliani is well known for his portraits as well as nude
paintings. This picture is the sketch of a sitting nude.
Anna Akhmatova, the Russian poet from St. Petersburg came to Paris in
1910. She met Modigliani and with her the artist started his first love
affair of his life.
Anna Akhmatova was initially famed for her physical beauty. While she
was in Paris, she posed nude for Modigliani.
Modigliani’s treatment of the female body shows on the one hand
the influence of classical art and on the other, his modernizing impetus,
leading to break established rules so as to portray naked bodies exactly
as they appear.
The desire of the artist to preserve the purity of sensation is visible
in his drawing. The clear and forceful artistic messages are transmitted
skillfully. Depiction of the seated nude shows Modigliani’s entire
debt to and admiration for Cezanne.
The Russian poetess Anna Akhmatova, who posed in this picture for Modigliani
noted, “You must understand that the resemblance with the model
didn’t interest him, merely the pose.”
This composition is in a provocative pose and is full of sensuality.
Modigliani as a continuator of Italian Primitive art, through his distinctive
method, generated gracefulness to the picture. The artist has exhibited
all his sensibilities.
