This is an outstanding painting from the series of nudes by Modigliani. Art lovers all over the world had admired this unique work of Modigliani. The painting is quite excellent and amazing.

It is hard to classify Modigliani’s works because he was influenced by many different artists and styles. The works of Toulose Lautrec, Cezanne and Pablo Picasso inspired him a lot. A few were of the opinion that Modigliani’s nudes were scandalous.

Modigliani was greatly influenced by the art of Africa and Cambodia. His interest in African masks is evident in this painting. The figure is with mask-like face, distinctive almond eyes, pursed mouth, twisted nose and elongated neck. The model in this painting belongs to the ‘Venus Naturalis’ male ideal of love as identified by scholars. The models of that group are composed of dark hair, full breasts and wide hip. They will be of Mediterranean appearance.

The bed on which the figure is reclining is sketchily suggested. The nude is painted in a naturalistic style in warm color. Her head is slightly tilted towards her left. The sensuous contours of the model’s body are clearly defined by arabesques. The truncated body occupies most of the canvas space thus minimizing distraction.

The artist has depicted the figure as a sex object on display. The reclining nude is stretching out provocatively, offering herself to the viewer.

This nude painting by Modigliani is meant as a tribute to the perfection of the female form.
