Reclining Nude with Blue Cushion
In 1916, Modigliani started work on his series of nudes. Altogether he painted over thirty nude pictures.
Reclining Nude with Blue Cushion is an outstanding picture among the
above series.
When he painted nude, Modigliani never used the women with whom he had
a lasting relationship to model for him. He used housemaids, waitresses
and professional models.
His models were of two types – ‘Venus Naturalis’ and ‘Venus Coelestis’. The model in this painting belongs to the ‘Venus Naturalis’ type with characteristic dark hair, full breasts and wide hips. A characteristic of Modigliani’s nude painting is the starkness of the settings, the bed on which the model is reclining and the background against which she is posing are sketchily suggested.
The nude is painted in a naturalistic style with warm color. The sensuous contours at the nude’s body are clearly defined by arabesques. As the truncated body occupies major part of the canvas, there is less chance for distortion. The artist has clearly depicted woman as a sex object on display. The reclining nude in this picture is stretching out provocatively offering herself to the viewer.
