Reclining Nude with Left
Arm Resting on Forehead Painting by Amedo Modigalini
Reclining Nude – 2
Amedeo Modigliani is the greatest nude art painter in art history. His series of nude paintings are much sought after. This “Reclining Nude” with left arm resting on her forehead is an excellent example of Modigliani’s figure painting.
In this painting, there is an elegant arresting arrangement of curved lines and planes as well as a striking idealization of feminine sexuality.
The work has a wonderful elegance which is unusual but compelling. Modigliani went on to develop a sophisticated, mannered style built upon graceful decorative arabesques and simplified forms.
The figure presents her removed from reality. She is locked in silence and introspection. Expressions of the individual are hidden behind the mask-like countenance. The opened eyes of the figure take on the visionary role as usual in the paintings by the symbolist painters.
Modigliani applied many sculptural effects in his nudes, particularly the characteristic elongation of the head, the long raised ridge of the nose and the long neck. For many people, the name of Modigliani is synonymous with his nude art. No other painter of the century has painted the female human body as did by Modigliani. Yet, his nudes evolve involuntary associations of classicism. They are continuation of a great tradition of European painting, thematically as well as in the spiritual interpretation of the theme.
The nude in this picture constitutes a celebration of beauty, immaculateness and perfection. The picture dispenses with an idealized visual context and is a contribution to the freeing of sex from moralistic intrusion.
