Seated Nude
Modigliani’s portraits as well as nude paintings are well known.
But the intensity and intimacy that we find in his nude art is unique.
Nude art is an integral part of Modigliani’s paintings. Modigliani’s
nude art is very close to reality. The models of his nude art dictate
the way he depicts them by their natural forms.
Among his various nude paintings, ‘Seated Nude’ is a deeply
sensuous creation. The classically simple flat form, elongated proportions
and delicate stylization – all these are due to the influences from
African sculpture to Botticelli style. Modigliani’s nude painting
form a bridge between the generation of Toulouse-Lautrec and the Art Dec
painters of the 1920s.
A characteristic of this painting is the starkness of settings. The background
against which the model is posing is sketchily suggested. The colors are
warm and the nude is painted in a naturalistic style. The sensuous contours
of the model’s body are clearly defined by curvy lines or arabesques
which guide the eyes of the viewer around the hieratic form. As the truncated
body occupies most of the canvas space, there is no room for distraction.
The artist has clearly depicted woman as a sex object on display. The
woman is posing provocatively, offering herself to the viewer.
