Woman in Yellow Jacket
The portraits painted by Modigliani are very famous. In
Paris, he got the inspiration in portraiture from his
contemporary artists Cezanne, Toulose-Lautrec and
Picasso.
Through the influence of Dr. Paul Alexandre, Modigliani
got lot of portrait commissions. Through the friendship of
Alexandre, Modigliani got the first portrait commission
from Baroness Marguirite de Hasse de Villers. At the last
stage of painting this portrait, Modigliani painted her red
riding jacket in yellow color. She refused the portrait and
Paul Alexandre bought that under the name ‘Women in
Yellow Jacket.’
Modigliani painted this impressive portrait in 1909, and
it is known today as ‘The Amazon.’ In the preparatory
stage of a portrait, Modigliani used to slowly encircle
his subject playing through various possibilities of
expression before finally arriving at a subtle
understanding of the subject.
He has depicted Baroness with her arrogance, self-
confidence, pride and flirtatiousness as well as a
great measure of reserve in her gaze. On completion,
she harshly rejected the portrait and refused to pay
for that. Her action itself confirms that the artist was
correct in depicting her as an arrogant woman.
