Antonello da Messina - Famous Paintings
This painter from Sicily grew up during the Italian Renaissance and the
early Dutch painting cast a spell on him. In spite of his Sicilian lineage
Antonello’s works were impressive to the northern region of Italy,
especially Venice, which was a bit surprising. His outstanding work “Sibiu
Crucifixion”of 1455 is in Muzeul de Arta in Bucharest. Antonello’s
reputed art work of the same period was “Crucifixion” in the
Royal Museum at Antwerp. The Flemish influence was detectable in his early
works. Using standard iconography and Flemish style he painted in 1460
“Salting Madonna”.In all his works the volumetric representations
were very well taken care of. Antonello’s other famous paintings
1460 were “Abraham served by the angels” and “St. Jerome
penitent” which are now kept in the Museo Nazionale della Magna
Grecia in Reggio Calabria.
“Salvator Mundi” and “St.Gregory’s Polyptych”
are his other masterpieces.
