Antonello da Messina Painting St. Jerome in His Study

St. Jerome in His Study.

This beautiful painting by Antonello done in 1475 on wood panel has projected the study as a raised platformed structure.

It looks more of a performance stage. The bookshelf has a few books and the dark roof makes the highlighting of the study effective. The intricately woven carpet and the peacock with another bird at the doorway adds warmth and looks more natural. The township shown as tiny images through the window at the rear conveys the depth of the study hall.It is a bit surprising to see a peacock painted here which traditionally was represented in Hindu folklore. This picture is at Nation gallery in London.
