Antonello da Messina Painting St. Sebastian

St. Sebastian.

In Christianity the stories and parables narrated in the Bible are replete with nailing someone or crucifixion as was done to Jesus. In this touching and sad picture a young St.Sebastian has been stripped of his clothes and tied to a pole and a heavy iron sphere chained to his feet. On top of this he has been tortured by hammering nails into his body at several locations.

This pathetic themed painting of Antonello was done in 1476 as a wood panel. Its now at Alte Meister Gallerie in Dreden in Germany.
