Facts about Vladimir Borovikovsky life &
Vladimir was a well known Russian portraitist and his art belongs to the last phase of 18th century traditional Russian portraiture. He was born into a family of Ukrainian Cossacks. His father Luka Borovik and his two brothers painted icons for local churches. He drew two pictures of the house where Empress Catherine II the Great stayed during her Ukraine visit. She recognized his talent and sent him to St Petersburg as one of the court painters.
Since Vladimir was too old to join the Academy of Arts he learnt art under Austrian painter I.B.Lampi who was also a Russian court painter then. Russian artist Dimitry Levitzsky also supported Vladimir. In 1795 Vladimir became an Academician.
His area was making of portraits, of which he made around 500 in his
