Cwravaggio -Coe used to take part in 800 metre events in the beginning. Later, he concentrated on 1500 metre events. He ran 800 metres in 1 min. 73 seconds and 1000 metres in 2 min. 12.18 seconds. His timing in 1500 metres was also a record. Coe won silver medal in 800 metres and gold medal in 1500 metres in Moscow Olympics (1980). He won the silver medal in 800 metres and a gold in 2500metres at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. He was the first athlete to win gold medals in 1500 metre events in the two successive Olympics.

He was not included in the British team in the Seoul Olympics (1988) due to illness, despite his request. The president of International Olympic Committee, Sir Juan Antonio Samaranch, however, asked him to witness the events as a special invitee. Indeed, it was an acknowledgement of his extraordinary talents in the international track arena.
