The Garden of the Infanta

He started sailing in that boat in 1895. His first stoppage was Gloucester harbour. He sayed there for a fortnight and bought necessary items. Next he went to West Port Harbour in Nova Scotia, where he stayed for a week and secured all his goods for the boisterous Atlantic.

The first week in the Atlantic went by peacefully. To forget his loneliness, Joshua made the moon his friend, talked to the moon loudly and sang songs. His loneliness used to wear off only with the high gale. During the gale, he used to get busy in controlling the boat from turning upside-down, but after the gale, the same solitude used to return. By 10th July, ‘Spray’ reached 1,200 miles east of Cape Sable. He had covered this distance with the speed of one hundred fifty miles per day in the first eight days. By this speed, he soon reached the island of Fayal and took four days’ rest. He refused the services of a young pilot because he wanted to experience the happiness of sailing all alone.
