MARTIN LUTHER
GERMANY: RELIGIOUS REFORMIST
BORN: 1483 DIED: 1546

Martin Luther is supposed to be father of ‘Protestantism’ in Christianity. This German monk and scholar who questioned the doctrines of Roman catholic church in the first quarter of the 16th century is the most famours name in the story of Reformation. With the passage of time many evils had crept into the Roman Catholic religion and the priests were taking full advantage of their position. Martin Luther was surprised to learn that some priests were collecting funds for building St.Peter’s Cathedral in Rome and in lieu of donations absolving the donors of their sins. Luther was also sent such tickets. He flew into a rage and threw it in a fire as there is no such provision in Bible, nor such absolution of sins is permitted. He asked 90 questions to these priests and a copy was pasted at the door of Wittenberg Church, which was the residence of Pope who was the highest ecclesiastical authority. The entire Europe was in ferment at this show of protest by Luther. Luther remained undaunted and wrote many books and letters to Christian leaders to substantiate his stand.
