Francis Chechester camped in Sydney for 47 days. Gypsy Moth was completely overhauled; food was stocked and he left Sydney. But, just a week later, the Gypsy Moth ran into another storm. A strong wave damaged the cockpit and broke the propeller shaft.

The whole of February was spent in braving the storms. The waves went on causing damage to the boat and Francis had to spend all his time repairing it. Before starting on the voyage,Francis Chechester had planned to go round the Cape of Good Hope on the onward journey to Australia and to go round Cape Horn while returning. In the month of March, as soon as he started going round Cape Horn, a great storm arose and filled the cockpit with water five times. While emptying the water, Chechester’s shoes were filled with it and he felt he had never felt so cold before. The velocity of wind was 60 knots per hour and the self-steering device stopped functioning
