| It was April, 1944. The roads in Herakleion, the capital of
Crete, were full of the German soldiers. The cinema show had just got over.
People were rushing towards their homes. The narrow roads had become narrower
with wandering German soldiers and the viewers of the film show. Amidst
them, there was a sudden arrival of General Kreipe’s car. The soldiers
and people gave way to the General’s car. Soldiers saluted him. General
Kreipe sat erect. Neither did he wave his hands, nor stood up in the car
to accept the salute. He just nodded his head in acceptance. Soldiers, who
were familiar with the habit of their strict disciplinarian General, were
shocked for a moment. But, they attributed this change to the temperamental
mood of the General, little knowing the General taking the salute in this
fashion was not their General Kreipe, for General Kreipe tied with the rope
was lying below in the car. He was being kidnapped by the two British Majors,
Major Patrick and Major Moss.
