Sydney was still, 3,000 miles away, when Francis discovered that his self-steering device had broken down. The steel frame had snapped and it was not possible for Francis to repair it. He felt that he would have t give up as a big boat like the Gypsy Moth could not be manually steered for 3,000 miles. Francis gave up hope and had some brandy. It was 15th November. He had now been on the waters for 80 days at a stretch.
