Peasants' Dinner.

By 14th March, the tunnel was ready. About 500 men had worked on the tunnel. By a secret draw, the names of 220 prisoners were selected, out of which 20 were nominated by the secret ballot because they had worked hard on the project.

On 24th March, Roger Bushell, Chief of ‘X’, announced that the escape would take place that night.

Exactly at7:40 an escapee descended the tunnel. He was Roger Bushell, who had worn a gray suit. Holding a briefcase, he looked like a smart businessman. 76 prisoners came out of the tunnel, but with apprehension and fear. The work of escaping was done quietly and slowly. The disguised escapees had to wait due to a variety of hardships. Some escapees looked like the foreign workers while the rest were in the German uniform. A Soien’s sound also delayed the activities of the escapees.
