Portrait of a Young Man

Ganju Lama was awarded the Victoria Cross for his exceptional bravery. The supreme commander of that region. Lord Mountbatten, observed that the Victoria Cross to Ganju Lama was the most significant one. It was only due to the daring and pre-eminent act of valour that the Japanese had to pay a heavy price of 70 soldiers for their defeat.

The victory over the Acrot Vlley in tunis could have eliminated the Nazis from the whole of Africa. So, General Montgoomery was very much inclined to win that front. Hitler’s General Rommel had settled his troops there thinking that the valley was in conquerable. On one side of the valley was the Mediterranean Sea and a chain of mountains. It was almost impossible to reach the valley by crossing them. The enemy had 12 German and 26 Italian infantry brigades. Supporting them was the 15th brigade of the German tanks. The main front was controlled by the Italian brigades.
