Today, their bravery can be estimated from the fact that 14 out of 1,351 recipients of the Victoria Cross are the Gorkhas. Besides them, 105 Britishers, 20 Indians, 17 Australians, 12 Canadians, 9 New Zealanders, 3 south Africans, one Rhodesian and one Fijian, each have been honoured with the Victoria Cross. Half of the recipients of the Victoria Cross took part in World War I (1914-18). During World War II only 182 persons were honoured with this medal. Two doctors were also decorated with the Victoria Cross for taking part in the South African War. A father and a son, as well as four brothers were also honoured with this medal.
