The entire area was surrounded by ice. In between the ice were the deep patches of water. Anybody in these circumstances would have returned, but not Robert E. Perry and his companion Hansen. They were proceeding with their sledge, pulled by 60 dogs. Suddenly, Robert took out his compass so as to know the direction of their journey. To his surprise, the needle of the detector did not move. He tried again, tossed it, but the needle did not budge. He was shocked, for now there was no other way by which he could know the direction. And this was a frightening fact, as getting lost in the wide sea of frozen ice meant death. And the fact of death is quite frightening for any human being, be there a man as brave as Robert.
