Peasants' Dinner.		Head of a Girl

George Bushell was one of those escapees who was shot dead. He had directed the ‘X’ organization with a remarkable sense of responsibility. Two weeks later, urns contaning the cremated ashes of the dead were brought. As soon as the prisoners received the news of the shooting of 50 escapees, they expressed their opposition and grief by wearing back diamond on their sleeves, signifying mourning and placed the urn in a memorial vault.

In June, a letter arrived in Stalag Luft-III, a tunnel called ‘George’ was prepared. The prisoners were to escape, but the situation changed. The suit shed army was only 30 miles away. The Germans took the prisoners out of the camp and forced them to march on foot, for weeks. On 2nd May, 1945, The British 2nd Army set them free.
