A Dwarf Holding a Tome

The undamaged watertight compartment of the torpedo kept Kennedy’s half of the PT boat afloat. Six persons, including two engineers-McMahon and Johnston-fell into the water. Beside the third officer, Ross, Harris, Znisser and starkey were also making efforts to survive in the water. Harris had badly hurt his leg. While along with Kennedy on the damaged part of the boat were McGuire, Mauer and Albert, and one officer, Thom. Only two remained untraceable-Kirksey and Marney.

Harris shouted from inside the water and informed that McMahon was badly hurt. Kennedy, who had been on the Harvard swimming team five years ago, immediately drove into the water, and caught hold of McMahon 100 yards away. Kennedy took him in tow and headed for the PT. But, wind was also playing a mischievous game. It was keeping the boat away from them. It took Kennedy 45 minutes to bring both of them to the boat and three hours to get everyone aboard. Reaching the boat some collapsed into sleep immediately, while others talked how wonderful it was to be alive.
