Kitchen Maid with the Supper

However, a ferret noticed the 81st escapee coming out of the tunnel. He immediately loaded his rifle. He was going to shoot the escapee, but another escapee, who had taken shelter in trees, jumped and came before the ferret and shouted down “Don’t shoot sentry. Don’t fire”. The ferret was taken aback. In nervousness, he shot wild. That marked the end of the Harry tunnel. The guard’s torch light showed the main gate of the tunnel. He gave a whistle and ferret came running to him. The escapees hidden in jungles also surrendered.

In almost two-three days, majority of the escapees were arrested. The Germans shot dead 50 and sent back 8 to the torture camp. Rest 15 were imprisoned. The Germans violated the Geneva agreement by shooting 50 escapees. Perhaps, they wanted to dishearten the prisoners, but 8 prisoners of the torture camp escaped by making a tunnel. Later, they were arrested, but by then, the Germans were in a precarious position in the World War II. They could not shoot the prisoners.
