Portrait of a Gentleman

Robert was adventurous from the very beginning. He first traveled to Greenland in 1886. It was his belief that the North Pole’s boundary was up to Greenland. Thus, he went on this ‘expedition for experience’ as he later called it.

In 1891, he took leave from the navy and went on his first expedition to the North Pole. His wife, Josephene, also went with him. By the time he reached Englefied, some members of the expedition hesitated to move further on. The biting cold had frightened them. But, Robert, withtwo sledges, 20 dogs and lesser members, proceeded on with his journey for seven long years. When he was just 500 miles away from his destination, he had to return. His eight toes had melted in the ice and the bone of the leg had broken. It took two years for his leg to normalize. Yet, all this while, his enthusiasm to discover the North Pole didn’t die.
