defeated so easily. In 1910, Captain Scott undertook another expedition.
This time he took the horses from Siberia too. These horses could walk on
snow. In New Zealand, Captain Scott received an unexpected telegram from
Amundson, who was already on his expedition to the South Pole. These two
brave men met on Ross Island. Both were eager to reach the South Pole and
both wanted to be the first one to do so. Scott was confident that he would
reach earlier as he had the Siberian horses. But, luck was against him.
Scott had to postpone his journey for four days because of the heavy snow
storm. In addition to this, the dogs were tired. They were sent back. But,
the most cruel thing was still to happen. There was no food left for the
horses, so they had to be killed. Ultimately, the members had to pull the
sledge themselves. By the time they were 120 miles away from the pole, only
one sledge and five people were left. All others had died on the way. And
when finally Captain Scott reached the South Pole, he got a shock. The flag
of Norway was already fluttering at the pole |
