| Listening to the cries of the dying soldiers, firing was intensified
from the camps ahead. Thapa decided to attack each camp from the rear. He
himself pounced on a machinegun, and killed two Italian soldiers with his
pistol. When Thapa’s brigade reached the last camp, only two soldiers
were left alive. But, three of them were bold enough to attack the last
camp. Thapa’s ‘khukhri’ killed two more soldiers of the
enemy. Both his companions also killed the enemy soldiers. Thus, Thapa’s
bravery helped to occupy that mountain: a way to enemy’s center of
activities. This cleared the way for the sixth Rajputana Rifles, the Royal
Sussex and the Ninth Gorkha Brigade. After the significant victory in Africa,
General Montgoomery recommended Victoria Cross to Lal Bahadur Thapa, which
was indeed the most suitable honour for the brave man like Thapa.
