Jim Corbett was not a hunter. By profession, he was a soldier, and in the First World War, he had led the 70th Kumaon soldiers battalion in France. During the Second World War, he taught the British soldiers the guerrilla tactics. For this, he was suitably rewarded. He was accoladed with the title of the Lt. Colonel.

During the early quarter of the 20th century, the Kumaon region had become a favourite ground for the tigers. About 525 people were killed by the tigers. Everybody was frightened. In 1925, Jim Corbett came down to the Kumaon valley and plunged into the adventure of killing the man-eaters. From 1925 to 1930, a man-eater tigress ruled the kingdom. She had killed 64 people and Jim Corbett took one year to finally kill this man-eater.
