Earlier, Captain Cook and Ross had endeavored to find the South Pole. Ross had found an island, a dam and a sea, which now had been named after him as Ross Island, Ross.

Fifty years after Ross’ discovery, Captain Scott with-40 people had started his expedition to the South Pole in 1901. These brave men experienced many difficulties. They tolerated the nature’s fury, but kept on walking. Scott, along with other members, reached,82* longitude, but the South Pole was still 500 miles away. And they could not move further on because of the violent snow storm and inadequate food. All of them had to return disappointed.
