On 23rd May, the German tanks were only12 miles away from the Dunkirk coast. The Nazi General Gerd von Rundstedt was leading the attack. This 65-year-old general did not believe in Rommel-like Nazi general’s tank warfare. He believed that it was dangerous to keep more distance between the infantry and tanks. Hence, his attacking tactic was slow, and sometimes he had to stop the advancement of tanks. That was why Commander Gort’s soldiers reached Dunkirk and escaped from there.

The second incident in favour of the British troops was that Hitler himself inspected the front and permanently stopped the attack by the tanks.
