By Friday, the Dover waterfront had become a vast shipyard because frantic work was going on there to repaid the crippled vessels. New boats also arrived there. The navigators had no helmets, but they shielded their heads with enamel bowls and zinc buckets. One lifeboat alone worked for 30 times between the beach and the destroyers.
