Giraud was not disheartened there too. He decided to make use of the mountain trails. It was not an easy task for the old and the limping general to climb and twist on the craggy peaks. One night, he was suddenly encircled by three soldiers, with bayoneted rifles. When a soldier spoke in the Swiss dialect, Giraud though he was safe.

The guards took Giraud into Basel, where he gave his identification. As soon as the Germans came to know that Giraud was beyond their reach, they became furious. Above all, the Swiss refused to surrender him.
