Giraud knew that the frontier guards must have been extra alerted and search for the general must have been intensified. Finally, when Giraud crossed the French Border, that part of territory was already occupied by the German troops. He hoped to slip over the line into the unoccupied area, but found that the German guards were stopping every man over 5 feet 11 inches tall. Immediately, he went back by train across south-east Germany to the Swiss frontier. Unfortunately, the Swiss frontiers were also tightly closed by the Germans.
