Prime Minister Churchill expressed his happiness over the evacuation, but he hastened to point out that wars were not won by evacuations. In that war, 200 ships, 177 planes, including 40 percent of first-line bombers, equipment of ten divisions, 2,000 guns, 60,000 vehicles and 76,000 tons of ammunition were destroyed. Hitler later pointed out that the Dunkirk beach became the beach of devastation to England.

However, England was not willing to accept such humiliation. The same afternoon, Churchill delivered his historic address to the House of Commons, and said: “We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight in the seas and oceans… we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills…,we shall never surrender.”
