There had never been an Armada like it before. It was manned by the rich and the poor, the famous and the unknown, the old and the young. It was an international mercy fleet. The Armada included a Dominican monk’s yach, a lifeboat of a clerk of Bank of England, tea-brewing boat controlled by a Chinese steward, Ah Fong: Count Dracula ship which had scuttled in 1919; Mosquito gunboat, built to ward off the Chinese river pirates, and Dumpling beach boat, built in Nepolen’s time. The Armada also included a minesweeper Fitzroy on which an Irish crew worked. Nurses were sailing on the hospital ship Dinard. California born john Fernald was commanding one of the 12 lifeboats towed by the tugboat Racia.
