The 25-mile-long coast of Dunkirk was known as ‘the graveyard of
ships’ due to the German bombing. Hence, it was imperative for the
British troops to cross the English Channel by small ships. When the war
broke out on this fron, the British troops had 202 destroyers. Only 40
destroyers were then left, but they could not even carry men. The merchant
ships could have been used to lift the troops, but they were incapable
to protect them from the air attacks
