| Andree started her work with the cooperation of a young fellow
named Arnold and her father. They decided that after the escape, they would
reach the Belgium frontier. From there, they would bypass the German checkpoints
and reach France. After reaching the Spanish frontier from France, they
decided to travel by bicycles. The visit was to conclude at such a shelter
point where a ‘safe’ house could be built. After an overnight
rest, they were to march on foot to reach northern Spain. And, finally,
with the help of the British consulate, a car journey was planned to Gibraltar
via Madrid. In order to arrange for the final attempt of the escape, Arnold
went to Spain and contacted a 30-year-old woman, Greef, who was sturdy and
well experienced. She became second only to Andree in the organization.
She arranged bicycles and food for the escapees and recruited the Basque
smugglers as guides for marching over the Spanish mountains |
