| In February, 1942, the Gestapo raided Andree’s house
in Brussels, but only her elder sister could be arrested. Andree returned
home after six weeks, but fortunately, escaped arrest and field to France.
Meanwhile, the Gestapo succeeded in arresting three leading members of the
‘Comet’. British intelligence, which was a great admirer of
the activities of ‘Comet’, was disappointed with these arrests.
Meanwhile, Belgium’s aristocrat youngman, Greinde took over the leadership
of ‘Comet’. He divided Belgium into many regions and between
June and October 1942, he succeeded in bringing 54 aircrew to the south
in 13 terms. Safely back in Britain, the aircrew highly appreciated their
escorts. They narrated in detail the dreadful long night journeys in the
crowded trains, the nerve-wrecking police checks, the insolated farmhouse
where they rested and finally of San Se Besteam’s light-the heady
lights of freedom. All airmen talked proudly of Andree. |
