These fugitives did not face much difficulties on the way to the Somme
river. Reaching there, they saw that a picnic party was in a joyous mood.
All of them were appalled to see it. However, Andree succeeded in obtaining
a long coil of wire and an inflated inner tube from a nearby farm. At
night, she slipped into the river and after swimming 40 yards to the far
bank, tied the wire to a tree.
