Meanwhile, conforming to the appeal issued by the British Government,
the spectacular Armada moved to the Dunkirk. It consisted of hundreds
of boats built for the short run river work. Before this, they were never
put on the sea. They lacked adequate provisions for protection against
the bombs and naval attacks. One crew had nothing but only biscuits to
eat. In order to supply surgical dressings to the ambulance of the ship,
troops stripped off their underclothes and sliced them into bandages.
