According to Commander Gort’s strategy, his first line troops were fighting tooth and nail against the Germans, and the rear line was constantly retreating. By then, two lakh troops reached Dunkirk. These troops, lined up on the beach sand, were waiting for the boats to escape. And 50,000 of them were ready to embark immediately.

Meanwhile, conforming to the appeal issued by the British Government, the spectacular Armada moved to the Dunkirk. It consisted of hundreds of boats built for the short run river work. Before this, they were never put on the sea. They lacked adequate provisions for protection against the bombs and naval attacks. One crew had nothing but only biscuits to eat. In order to supply surgical dressings to the ambulance of the ship, troops stripped off their underclothes and sliced them into bandages.
