General Henri Honore Giraud was considered an outstanding officer in the French Army. In the First World War, after escaping from the Germans, he went to Africa and commanded a military district at Metz during peace time. Then began the Second World War and he was made the commander-in-chief of the Allied forces at Laon when the Germans broke out of the Forest of Ardennes and adopted an aggressive attitude. Giraud rushed to the front and reviewed the whole scenario. When the Germans captured him, he was present in the forward machine-gun nest with the same purpose.
