Pan was a fan of the lifestyle of the Hong Kong people as it was based on the Anglo-US cultural standards and she felt suffocated in the proletarian rule of the Chinese Communist Party. She had witnessed the confiscation of her father’s entire property by the Communists. He was a prosperous Canton businessman. Collective labour at the commune was torturous to her.
