Pan Wan-chuang was the beloved of Lau Ping-sang. Both of them were in search of an escape from the Communist Chine. They wanted to reach Hong Kong so as to marry in a free atmosphere. Pan was a fan of the lifestyle of the Hong Kong people as it was based on the Anglo-US cultural standards and she felt suffocated in the proletarian rule of the Chinese Communist Party. She had witnessed the confiscation of her father’s entire property by the Communists. He was a prosperous Canton businessman. Collective labour at the commune was torturous to her. Her bitter experience there had made her determined to find an escape
