| By sending Captain Tennant to Dunkirk, Admiral Ramsay decided
to allow the British troops to cross the English Channel. On Monday, 27th
May, Captain tenant moved to Dunkirk on Wolfhound destroyer. As soon as
the ship cleared Dover, the air attacks bean on it. In the two-hour bombardment,
the British destroyer pounded ack-ack guns and swerved almost continuously
to dodge the rain of bombs. As soon as it reached near Dunkirk, Captain
Tennant’s heart sank to see the havoc at the lport. Black smoke from
burning oil refineries enveloped the harbour, and the miles of warehouses
and quays seemed on fire. Above all, the German bombardment was don incessantly.
Only one telephone link remained open to London. Through an error in interpreting
orders, 100 odd heavy anti-aircraft guns were destroyed and 30,000 incendiaries
and 15,000 highly explosive bombs killed 1,000men, women and children.
