With the defeat of Gen. Gort’s troops and no hope of their escape, the British Secretary of War, on 26th May, 1940, ordered a complete British withdrawal. However, there was no possibility of a successful retreat for Gen. Govt. He sent a cable to the War Secretary, informing that if they retreated, a great part of the troops would be inevitably perished, and equipment would also be destroyed. It was a reality that while joining the army, Gort had never thought of ever leading the British army to its biggest historic defeat.
