Still Life with 'La Danse

On 26th January, 1941, Independence Day was being celebrated in Calcutta. Strict vigilance was kept on Bose’s residence. But, Bose was not deterred. He had to go to his house for some important work. Thus, he walked on that narrow lane, leading to his residence. Inspector Rai noticed this Pathan. He called him from behind. First, Bose did not stop, but when Rai threatened to shoot him, he stopped. Rai asked him the reason for wandering so late at night. Bose cleverly made an excuse, “I was going to get medicine for my sick wife,” Bose spoke in the ‘Pashto’. Rai released him thinking that he was a genuine Pathan.
